Are There Crickets & Grasshoppers in Las Vegas
Many times people wonder whether the bug they are seeing outside their Las Vegas home is a cricket or grasshoppers. The answer is Yes! Both! Are Crickets keeping you up at night? How about Grasshoppers? Although they both are apart of the same big family, there are some key differences (although both are in Vegas). Crickets In Las Vegas
There are approximately 2400 different species of crickets throughout the world, but only about 2 are calling our Las Vegas Valley home. Most notable to our area are the field crickets and the house crickets. They aren’t known to be harmful or dangerous and could be described as more of a nuisance when chirping loud into the night. It is the male crickets who sing and create the sounds with their wings. Each wing has a tiny rasp-like area at the tip. The cricket scrapes the top of one wing over the bottom of the other to make that characteristic chirping sound. Although sometimes their songs are beautiful, once they are inside your house, they can become a real problem. Field and house crickets may feed on fabrics and other homely possessions.
They love the warm, dry climate that the Las Vegas Desert has to offer, and as soon as the scorching summer begins to ease, the ideal temperature of the fall is the perfect time for Cricket mating season, which brings about generous swarms and swelling choruses. While they may be mistaken for Grasshoppers, Field Crickets still have their numbers accounted for. Female crickets lay about 100 eggs in their lifetime and in a location that is hidden from other male crickets who want to destroy them. Their companions though, will defend their mates, even risking their own lives to protect a female carrying his eggs. Once those eggs hatch they have plenty of grub to eat out here in the desert. Crickets in Clark County feed on plants, fungi, and even other bugs.
Grasshoppers In Las Vegas
Grasshoppers are a little different. Specifically The pallid-winged grasshopper, which is native to the desert. Las Vegas residents I am sure can recall the summer of 2019 when grasshoppers invaded the Las Vegas Valley. I mean who can forget? The invasion was so large that the swarm of grasshoppers could be seen on the weather radar. Believe it or not, the cause of these harmless pests was due to the weather patterns steering them off course and ultimately more so North than not. Weeks prior to the grasshopper invasion, Las Vegas had seen 4.63 inches of rain, almost twice its normal average of 2.38 inches in the same period, ultimately creating a wetter and more humid environment. These grasshoppers are known to have eruptions about every five years or so, which is what happened a few years ago. Scientists are currently studying how we will be impacted by these pests in the near future with the everchanging weather patterns.
