Pest Summary

Pest Summary

Rodents are a global challenge, and Las Vegas is certainly no exception. In our local desert environment, residents most frequently encounter various species of rats and mice.

Identifying Your Pest

Most infestations in the valley involve Roof Rats, Norway Rats, or the common House Mouse. To help you determine exactly what you’re dealing with, we’ve outlined the specific characteristics of each species below.

Our Rodent Elimination Strategy

At Fortified Pest Control, we specialize in the unique behaviors of Las Vegas rodents. Our approach prioritizes safe, effective resolutions designed to eliminate the infestation while protecting the local environment and taking care of your family’s well-being.

About The Pest You're Dealing With

Deer Mice

Deer mice are slightly larger than your average house mouse, typically exceeding two inches in body length. They are easily identified by their sharp, pointed snouts, oversized furry ears, and a distinct "two-tone" color scheme: a reddish-brown back contrasted against a crisp white underbelly and feet.

  • Habitat: In the Las Vegas area, they usually stay outdoors, nesting in hollowed-out organic debris or beneath small rocks and gravel.
  • Diet: While they prefer foraging for nuts, berries, and insects, they are opportunistic scavengers.
  • Life Cycle: These mice reach breeding age at just two months old.
  • Signs of Trouble: Keep an eye out for chew marks on structures and the discovery of hidden nests.

House Mice

The standard house mouse is small, weighing between 0.5 and 1 ounce, and measuring only a few inches from nose to tail. Their fur is short and ranges from light brown to charcoal, with a slightly lighter belly.

  • Behavior: Unlike many other rodents, house mice are active during the day. They rarely hibernate, meaning they actively seek out warm indoor spaces when the temperature drops—a common issue for Nevada residents.
  • Nesting: They prefer dark, secluded spots and will set up camp as close to food and water as possible.
  • Rapid Breeding: A house mouse is ready to reproduce by six weeks of age. They can produce a new litter of up to six pups every 21 days.

Norway Rats

Often called "brown rats," these are the heavyweights of the rodent world, sometimes reaching 18 inches in length. They have a rugged, shaggy appearance with coarse brown or gray fur and scaly tails and ears.

  • Social Structure: These rats live in complex hierarchies. You may actually hear them "arguing" or fighting for dominance within your walls.
  • Diet: They are not picky, consuming everything from grains and seeds to meat and fruit.
  • Identification: Look for capsule-shaped droppings and dark, oily grease marks along baseboards. The darker the smudge, the more frequently the path is used by a large population.

Roof Rats

Sleeker and smaller than the Norway rat, the roof rat (or "black rat") is known for its incredible climbing ability. They can grow up to 15 inches long, and their hairless tails are often as long as their entire bodies.

  • Nesting: True to their name, they prefer high ground. Indoors, they are most often found nesting in attic insulation.
  • Diet: They lean toward a vegetarian diet of fruits and vegetables but will eat meat if necessary.
  • Visibility: Because they are naturally shy, seeing one out in the open usually indicates that the population has grown too large for them to remain hidden.

Do These Rodents Pose a Health Risk?

Yes. Beyond the structural damage caused by gnawing, the primary reason to clear an infestation is the health risk. These rodents are known carriers of various diseases that can be transmitted to humans and pets through droppings, urine, or bites.
