Identifying Pigeons with Characteristics & Traits

Pigeons (AKA Rock Doves) are easily identifiable to most Americans, and they carry the scientific name Columba livia domestica. They naturally have a wide range of colors on their neck, including white, yellow, blue, green, red, and purple. They almost always have two dark bands on their wings and one horizontal stripe on their tails. When singing, pigeons have a distinct song compared to other birds, which is known as a “coo”. The song they sing is used to attract a mate or another pigeon friend. When they walk or start to take flight, their heads noticeably bob back and forth. Pigeons also fly for only a short distance; they do not fly long distances like other scavenger birds.

Finding Rock Doves Around Las Vegas, Nevada

Pigeons are usually found throughout the day as they avoid looking for food at night. When the sun goes down, they will pack together in large flocks to nest. Foods they enjoy are seeds and nuts, but they will eat anything available, even to include garbage. As a nuisance in cities like Las Vegas, they will inhabit anything that reminds them of a cliff. This includes skyscrapers, power lines, other tower structures, and rooftops. Unlike other bird species, they will pair up for life and only mate with their one partner. After the male builds the nest, both parents will incubate the eggs. The two to five eggs that are laid will hatch after two and a half weeks.

While they are fairly harmless to the Las Vegas Valley, their feces are caustic to many humans, and the droppings can cause property damage. Alternatively, they can also be extremely harmful in areas where there are airplanes or fast-moving ground transportation such as trains. Their nests may be problematic if they are built inside ventilation ducts. Finally, they can attract predators that will use them or their eggs as a food source.

What animals prey on pigeons?

Good examples of pigeon predators are owls, sparrow hawks, eagles, raccoons, and possums.
