When you are trying to figure out the best remedy, being able to understand the behavior, reproduction cycles and preferred environments of flies is essential.

The Latin name for flies is Diptera, and they are typically considered a nuisance because of the diseases they carry. Because they tend to enjoy eating garbage and decaying meats, they spread pathogens to use humans easily. Particularly, E. coli, Staphylococcus and Salmonella are dangerous to people. They are also known for spreading pathogens such as hepatitis, typhoid, dysentery and cholera. Altogether, there are over 10,000 species of flies in America, and they can be found anywhere. While most flies live for only a week, others can live up to a year. Within a matter of weeks, over one million offspring can be produced.

While a fruit fly may be attracted to rotting fruit or sweet substances, other flies are naturally drawn to rotting meat and feces. In general, you can expect flies to be attracted to moist and organic materials of any kind. Finding what the fly is feeding on is key to removing it from a particular environment.

Reproduction for flies involves four phases. They begin as eggs, go through a larval period, develop into pupa and eventually become adults. During the larval period, they are known as maggots. A female that is fertilized will lay eggs in areas with a potential food supply for the maggots. Once they have the eaten plenty of organic material, they will enter the pupa stage in a dry environment. Most of the time, the whole process will take a couple of weeks. The adult flies will live the longest during the warm months of the year.

Early fly pest control prohibits problems with your animals

Getting your home’s problems with flies fixed is often a professional matter. This is especially true if you have farm animals or pets. When an animal has an infection or other wound, flies can be particularly ruthless. This excludes any incidents of biting flies. This is especially troubling for animal owners because the fly problem can lead to health issues in other animals that ends in expensive vet bills.
